Biometric Security Systems

Types Of Biometric Security Systems

Biometric security systems have become more popular over recent years. Not only used for government offices or law enforcement, these biometric security systems are coming to local community businesses, large corporations, and even residential homes. With prices dropping consistently and technology becoming more readily available, it is estimated that by 2020 everyone will have biometric security systems for their homes, businesses, and government agencies.

Different types of biometric security systems work in different ways. However, there are some common characteristics that all biometric security systems have. Every biometric security system uses some type of measurement of biological data to identify or verify identity of an individual for the purpose of either logical or physical access. Every biometric security system also uses an enrollment, registration, or set up process that registers the identifying biological characteristics and vital information about an individual into the biometric security system. This gives the biometric security system the information it needs to make comparisons and allow or deny access.

There are several different types of biometric security systems. The most common biometric security system for small to medium businesses and residences uses biometric fingerprint scans and technology. Fingerprint biometric security systems are available for use for inside door locks, dead bolt locks, small and large safes, gun safes, wall safes, and computer access. This is the most inexpensive type of biometric security system, and the most commonly used for residential and private use.

Other types of biometric security systems are being adopted by large corporations and government agencies. One type of biometric security system uses facial recognition technology. This type of biometric security system verifies an individual's identity by comparing facial characteristics to a pre-defined image. Facial recognition biometric security systems are being put in place around the globe for use in issuing passports and visas, as well as tracking travelers and immigrants.

Another type of biometric security systems is the iris biometric scan and technology. This type of biometric security system is most often used for physical access to a government agency, facility, or confidential files and patent information for large international corporations. The iris does not change over time, and the mere use of contacts or colored contacts cannot fool the iris recognition biometric security systems. This makes them the most popular security access systems in use in the federal government. Plans are currently underway to introduce iris scans and technology into biometric security systems for border control facilities.

Another type of biometric security systems uses voice recognition technology. This type of biometric security system is used for verification of identity, typically by law enforcement officials. Voice recognition allows probation officers and parole officers to more accurately track the movements of parolees. While house arrest bracelets and other tracking devices can be altered or removed to fool law enforcement officials, voice recognition cannot be faked. This allows for more accurate tracking of these convicted criminals.
